David Nathans Discusses Cybersecurity Leadership at the 2026 Cyber Patient Safety Symposium

David Nathans spoke at the 2026 Cyber Patient Safety Symposium (CPSS) on October 27, 2026, hosted by the UC San Diego Center for Healthcare Cybersecurity in La Jolla, California.

In his presentation, “Calm the FUD Down, Take Charge: Cyber Should Own IT!”, Nathans explored why cybersecurity failures persist despite continued investments in security tools, frameworks, and training. He highlighted a critical challenge facing organizations today: the disconnect between cybersecurity accountability and operational authority. While security teams identify vulnerabilities, IT departments frequently control the systems and processes needed to address them, creating challenges when operational and security priorities compete.

To address this gap, Nathans advocated for placing enterprise IT under cybersecurity leadership, bringing security operations, IT infrastructure, identity and access management, and product security under a unified structure. He also emphasized the importance of integrating cybersecurity throughout the medical device lifecycle, from design and development to postmarket monitoring and remediation.

Through research, collaboration, and industry engagement, the Archimedes Center continues to advance practical solutions that strengthen healthcare and medical device cybersecurity and support patient safety.
