On April 1st, Kevin Fu, the founder and director of Archimedes, testified before the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, at a hearing titled “Aging Technology, Emerging Threats: Examining Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities in Legacy Medical Devices.”

His testimony focused on why legacy medical devices, while essential to patient care, are increasingly insecurable. Many of these systems run on outdated software, creating real risks to hospital operations and patient safety.
He recommends:
  1. Expanding FDA’s in-house cybersecurity expertise, including post-market vulnerability risk management.
  2. Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) to improve preparedness.
  3. Establishing independent, national-scale testbeds to evaluate the security of medical devices in real-world hospital settings.
Cybersecurity is not the problem. It’s part of the solution for safe, modern healthcare.

"Firewalls are not enough.... there are no crashproof cars, just like there are no crashproof medical devices, so instead we need to make sure medical devices are RESILIENT, even if adversaries are inside hospital networks" - Prof. Kevin Fu, PhD
